This is the sequence of events that "fixed" the computer: removing the firewall totally, turning off the computer, and watching the eclipse and meteor.

Speaking of DOS, i find it interesting that techies here who deployed the new P2K WinXP computers had to run DOS scripts to get the job done. What's wrong (or right) with this picture? So much for DOS disappearing.
