I think the implications of my note is that there really isn't anything that
needs to be done here. If you want to use naming that requires that you
be in some topology-defined boundary, then tunnel back to that network
if you're not there. VPN technology is pretty well understood, after all,
and there are probably a lot of reasons you might want to do that besides
naming.

That said, my interpretation of the requirements is that we want to do
something with names such that they are quasi-global, or truly global.
I'm inclined to agree that grafting those requirement onto .local is most
likely the road to madness.
