I am waiting now for an install on a virtual IDE disk to complete or fail, after the install failing a couple of times on a virtual SCSI disk. If this fails I will try honeywall 1.2, however if this issue will re-occur with 1.2 perhaps someone can save me sometime by letting me know.

This is very odd. The install is basically a cut down Centos 5 distribution, so it should work. 1.2 was based on Fedora Core 6, which is pretty slimilar so I wouldn't expect that to work if the 1.3 doesn't. Either way, if the install works it should install very quickly: doing an install in Parallels takes ~5 mins for me.

It might be a driver issue. Could you try installing Centos 5 itself into your environment and let us know how that goes? If that works, then could you let us know what it detects your disks as?
