And, we all had a great time last Oct. 3rd, in Seattle, for our 6th,
after a ten-year break, Jazz Horn Fest. One day of talks, workshops,
concerts. Pat Smith (VCU), and Jeff Snedeker talked about Julius
Watkins's life and solos--Jeff had transcribed solos up on a power
point presentation, we could see and hear the improvised solos at same
time--wonderful. More great work by Lydia Van Dreel, Stephen Morley
(Sydney), Mike Simpson, Fred Johannesen (Bergen Norway), Rune Brodahl
(Oslo), and in the evening concert, Adam Unsworth, Vincent Chancey,
and the high point for me was a masterful, beautiful version of "Body
and Soul" by John Clark. Extra help came from Cara Sawyer, Stacy
Eliason, Nels Magelssen, and students of Jeff and Lydia. I think
Julius (and Buffington, Graas, Barrow, Chapin, Alonge, Miranda,
others) was smiling down from heaven, and Gunther S and Willie Ruff
were smiling from Boston and New Haven!

If someone could also post this to the yahoo list, that would be
great, I seem to not be able to. (Hi yahoo list friends!)

And, there was a nice preview in "The Stranger," Seattle's free arts
weekly. (Ignore the singles ads!) Link is here:

My thanks to all who attended and played! best----tom varner
