Ah yes. The year end "Nutcracker" performances. When I was playing regularly
December was the "Nutcracker" in the five county surrounding Detroit. Since
almost every community had a ballet school who decided that they had to
produce their own, a core group of musicians was formed to supplement the
community orchestra for the performances. Often only one very long dress
rehearsal was all that was scheduled. So for the three weeks priior to
December 25, every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, Saturday
afternoons and evenings, and Sunday afternoons and evenings were booked.
Sometmes Saturday mornings were scheduled rehersals. Three per day was a
chore. In my case I would play various parts depending on the personnel of
the local orchestra ( many of whom would have student plaayers absent for
the holidays). So I carried all four parts with me and play what I was
assigned. I often complained to my wife that I actually never say the
"Nutcracker" so I would ask her what all that tapping on the stage was all
about. Regards.
