I've just been trying to remember some of the pieces I particularly enjoyed
playing in High School Band.  It's been awhile so I had to look some of them up
but here's a partial list:
Originals
Vittorio Giannini, Symphony for Band -  interesting music, cool horn parts
William Schuman, George Washington Bridge - very interesting music, nice
rhythmically
Alfred Reed, In Memoriam - nice horn solo
Robert Jaeger, 3rd Suite - kind of quirky, fun to play
Joseph Willcox Jenkins, American Overture - a rollicking good time, horns
aplenty

Arrangements
Respighi,  Pines of the Appian Way -  what can I say?
Tchaikovsky,  Finale of 4th Symphony - well that's just fun for all
Stravinsky, Berceuse and Finale from the Firebird - it's 1/2 step lower, still
great

What other high school band music can anybody else think of that can keep the
horn players awake and out of mischief?  (a tall order)

- Steve Mumford
