A few weeks ago I inquired about recovering from bypass surgery -
thanks to everyone for your helpful replies. Hans - not sure the VPO
coffin story would have been appreciated by my wife, but it's good not
to take life too seriously.

I had the surgery last Wednesday. They must have done a good job,
since I was under anesthesia for ten hours - which is rough on the
lungs. Got my spirometer right here - getting close to 2000ml, roughly
equivalent to an easy three whole notes piano on middle C (the
spirometer is played by inhaling, however). That's right - I just
played for a few minutes one week after surgery. The weight of the
horn is a bit over the recommended lifting limit, but my surgeon said
that blowing was good. Of course, when I asked about playing the horn
again, he first thought I was giving him the old "Doctor, will I ever
be able to play the piano again?" routine.

I doubt the surgeon really knows what to tell someone, but Dr. Pain
will be helpful and he says be careful in the high register.

Thanks again,

Curt Austin, Horn 3 (maybe 4 for a while),
Lake George Community Band (New York)
