I may be not qualified to give any judgement on this matter, but I  
happen to know (and have played together with) various young hornists  
who consider themselves as "professionals" though to my ears they are  
not so good. They also use to complain about the number of available  
music jobs and the fairness of auditions. They won't play without some  
payment.

Then I would ask: why one should pay in order to listen to a mediocre  
musician? I'm quite content of being an amateur: I just enjoy myself,  
bear no responsibility...
