Well, maybe not always just a desire to practice but sometimes also a fear of not practicing. I've noticed that the teachers who get results have very high expectations, and there are definite consequences if you don't work hard enough. I'm an admirer of the carrot, but sometimes it takes a stick! Hopefully after some tasty carrots and a few whackings, the student becomes somewhat self motivated.
