I've not heard of this with flute players but I have seen a lot of piccolo players using earplugs for protection from themselves -- on stage and in the practice room. That is a loud and potentially damaging instrument.
I took to wearing earplugs AND construction over-ear sound potectors when I was doing a lot of loud practice at home -- at a few feet in front of me my SPL meter reads more than 100dB.
