Ah, nothing like going back to the old high school days of challenging for
position.

Subject: Re: [Hornlist] auditions

We have a relatively new phenomenon in our section. Twice this year, the
conductor has had us do recorded auditions to select players for
principal/obbligato parts. We are pretty evenly matched, and the results have
born that out. Most recently we auditioned for the obbligato part in Mahler 5,
which we'll be doing on June 6. (See www.lsso.org) The conductor did not know
which player was playing based on anything except his ears. He told us it was
very difficult for him to pick one over the other, because he would like one
part from one player and another part from another, etc.  He eventually picked
the player who usually plays fourth; when we did Till Eulenspiegel in the fall
he picked the player who normally plays second. The player for Till did a fine
job, and expect the player for the Mahler will as well.

Except for the anxiety leading up to the audition, I think the whole episode
just underlines what a great situation we are in - the section is well balanced
in capability and gets along. I have been long periods without one or another
of those statements, and I intend to enjoy the current situation as long as
possible.

Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra of Chicago
