Maybe that's because your living isn't dependant upon your horn playing. It's a different matter when horn playing is the sole means of keeping a roof over your head and food on the table. And if you're a freelancer, it gets even more tenuous because you're not protected by any type of tenure-your reputation is your booking agent.
