I conduct a youth orchestra and, when we have to play the lighter repertoire with lots of horn off beats, I get the horns to play them as long note chords to listen to the harmonies and chord changes. It often transforms the way they play the off-beats later. (This, of course, assumes that they care, something it is not always safe to assume).
It's very easy to play off-beats as though they are simply unison with the snare drum.
