It works better if you play in a group when there is something to do other
than off beats.  Many years ago, never mind how many exactly, I was in a
group in which that was all we played.  It got to the point that I was
looking forward to playing 6/8 marches as a break for the standard march.

I conduct a youth orchestra and, when we have to play the lighter repertoire
with lots of horn off beats, I get the horns to play them as long note
chords to listen to the harmonies and chord changes.  It often transforms
the way they play the off-beats later. (This, of course, assumes that they
care, something it is not always safe to assume).

It's very easy to play off-beats as though they are simply unison with the
snare drum.
