Steve, you wouldn't be referring to Walter/Wendy Carlos, whose "Swtiched-On
Bach" (Bach played on a Moog synthesizer) was a hit album in the 1960's, would
you?

To distract further attention from it, to make sure it dies, I'll
propose a quiz question promoted by Hans' recent post:

Here's the question:

There is a certain talented, generally-respected, and _extremely_
influential musician from the 20th century (but still alive) who
underwent a mid-career sex change.  IMO this person had as much
influence on ongoing musical practice as did Mozart or Beethoven in
their day.  Who is this person?

I suspect the oldsters are more likely to know the answer than the
youngsters.  (Why do we say "dial" a phone?)  Those who know the answer
might delay posting it to the list for a day so youngsters can ponder
the question.

Hello Bill,

having such super-ambitious female players in any section of any
orchestra,
no matter amateur or professional, would be a nightmare for the
particular section & the
orchestra as a whole. So she deserved some hacking.

As I said many times before but repeat again, playing in the orchestra
must never be seen
as a competition, even it has some in common with the olympics:
"Be a part of it, is worth joining. If I contribute to the success of
the organisation, I will
participate on the public recognition also, which gives a lot of
satisfaction."

But some people might be masochists & remain so, despite well meant
advise by more
experienced colleagues or by players with life long experience in the
high level professional
field.

"Cooking spoon swinger horn players all over the world, unite !" - but
these male players, who still
are hang on mothers kilt, join them - all together, male players, who
do not know if they are
male, female or nothing.

Fortunately we have many examples of female players, who perform
excellently, who do not have
or develop these strange attitudes which destroy the ensemble, but are
most valuable & reliable colleagues
in many orchestras.

Hans,

You now many of us on the listserv reside in the US.  English is the only
language we many (not all) are comfortable with.  I have to stop and reflect
from time to time that English is not your native tongue.  This place would
really be a mess if we had to exchange information with you in German.  Our
natural geography  denies us the opportunity to add languages to our skill
set.

I'm kind of humble when I realize you do so well with English and German and
I don't know how many other, Thai?

(Hell, I can't even handle spelling in English).

And Italian (quite fluently), Spanish (so-so), reading Frenchj, basic
Japanese, fundamental Mandarin, Latin, Greek (forgot much),
Bavarian, UpperAustrian, reading Suetterlin, French Court writing of
the 16th&17th/18th centuries, reading scripts of  the 14th & 15th
centturies slowly, and some basic knowledge of other languages. (my
private library is of about 5.000 titles), still learning.

Tried a new horn today, not having played since my last concert on
April 18th (K.447 w/orch.), but lips worked even for the finale of
Weber op.45 incl. high e-flat (twice).

Spelling, well, it has become a difficult issue for younger folks here
in Germany, not to talk about the right use of the grammar. I grew up
with perfect German command due to my mothers super correct pronounce.
It is the same in horn playing: super correct tongue action - saves a
lot of time, saves from mistakes ..........

The natural geography must not save as an excuse. Where I grew up,
there is no English speaking nation around, Italy, real Italy, is more
than 5 hours drive away, France also, but Czech & Hungarian (!) are
far too difficult languages, but Czech Rep. & Hungary border with
Austria. Learning languages is a good past time and it widens ones
personal horizon. Combining learning with entertainment, yes, that?s
it. Like warm-up on the horn, if done musically.

"I am filled with admiration of Jeff Smiley for taking on the whole academic
establishment with his assertion of BE. What an great statement of
certitude! Here - Do this. It works. No apology, no hedging. It works. Spend
the time, do the exercises. It works. So I bought the book, taking on faith
his certainty. Guess what? It works."  -- Doug Wagner
