To extend the area of search, there was a famous musician (Conductor/ Arranger/Composer) here in the UK who underwent a similar procedure. Not too similar because if I read the answers so far aright, it was the other way round, so to speak. He/she died last year, had his own band/orchestra in 60's/70's and wrote the music for one famous British animated film. Name, please and when someone comes up with the name, I'll recount a funny anecdote involving a horn player.
