I was asked to join a small big band (actually NOT an oxymoron) some years ago
because the guys getting the group together said they thought the horn sound
would be a great addition. There were several arrangers in the group, and any
charts they did they would have a dedicated horn part in F. On any "stock"
charts we did, however, i read the 2nd alto part. Believe me when i tellya, it
did wonders for my Eb transposition skills.

I had to play some 3rd trumpet on several charts.  I remember mentioning this
to the local university horn prof, and she told me that nothing ruins a horn
embouchure quicker than playing trumpet.  (she also told me...correctly...that
i was going to do whatever i wanted to anyway...) Here is the approach i took
on mouthpiece selection. I measured the inside diameter of my horn mouthpiece
just below the rim, and sought out a trumpet mouthpiece with the same
dimension, so as to make the least embouchure adjustment necessary.
The mouthpiece that came the closest...within a few thousandths of an
inch...was a Bach 3C. I have no idea whether this approach is valid, but it is
the one i took. The group no longer exists, but it was a fun time for 8 years.
By the way, my trumpet is also a Getzen Eterna Severinsen model.
