I do think that is a little unfair. This was a live broadcast and I am sure
there was no money for retakes. When you have a series like Live from
Lincoln Center the crew including the cameramen stay the same year in year
out, they know the guys in the orchestra and they know the instruments.

When you have a situation like this the crew does not get a lot of practice
for an individual show and certainly over the course of many seasons the
chance to hone their skills
Orchestra Hall was not built for camera positions initially and it takes a
lot of work to get cameras in place (patrons in seats displaced) and lights
in place.

It is possible that Boulez was not the intended shot but there was a camera
problem or other technical issue. It is possible that Dale or someone else
moved a chair on stage and the intended shot was no longer any good so they
went with Boulez. Lots of possibilities With live TV and without the
opportunity for retakes. We should all be thrilled we got to see and hear
this performance.
