Subject: old horns vs. shiny no-go's Hi all--Valerie, yes. I've tried some horrible but 'pretty' Chinese horns out there, that parents bought on ebay, local music store, etc.----"It was cheaper than renting!" AND I have helped students get really great Reynolds Contempora's for $625---VERY good horns. The other day I tried an old beat-up middle-school horn that a school had issued to a kid--a Compensating Double Getsen Elkhorn --maybe that was just a special horn , or someone was having a great day in Wisconsin (?) (in, say 1969?) --but, hey, nice horn, great singing high range. There are old used Holtons, Conns, Yamahas, Olds, Kings, that are good for students, and between $500--1000. Remember---if you have never heard of it, buyer beware. Although is is possible that in, say 7 or 8 years, Chinese horns will be good. I've heard they do make some very good flutes, and getting better fast. Best to all----tom v
