well said Tom, however, I would be VERY surprised if you have to wait that long.
Joe Sax (great name) runs a very reputable saxophone shop near here. Many of the Broadway guys go there. I was looking for a several saxes two years ago and Joe convinced me to go with a Chinese made saxophone that he was selling. I bought a soprano, tenor, and a bari, and I really pleased with them. He has sold several to doublers in town - guys that want a good horn but don't want to spring for a Super Action, Mark VI, or similar. I haven't seen or heard a good French horn yet. We were over with the Ridgewood Band three summers ago and a couple of the guys in the Red Army band were unhappily playing local instruments (Alexander was the horn of choice for those who could get them, but they had Holtons and few others makes as well). I've tried some horrible but 'pretty' Chinese horns out there, that parents bought on ebay, local music store, etc.----"It was cheaper than renting!" AND I have helped students get really great Reynolds Contempora's for $625---VERY good horns. The other day I tried an old beat-up middle-school horn that a school had issued to a kid--a Compensating Double Getsen Elkhorn --maybe that was just a special horn , or someone was having a great day in Wisconsin (?) (in, say 1969?) --but, hey, nice horn, great singing high range. There are old used Holtons, Conns, Yamahas, Olds, Kings, that are good for students, and between $500--1000. Remember---if you have never heard of it, buyer beware. Although is is possible that in, say 7 or 8 years, Chinese horns will be good. I've heard they do make some very good flutes, and getting better fast.
