Henry-Louis de la Grange's work, in four volumes, not all in print, is the ultimate documentary biography [disclosure, I am a minor contributor to volume 4], Mitchell's books are more nearly elaborate analytical studies, and quite valuable for that.
I would propose as a general introduction also Peter Franklin: "The Life of Mahler" and/or Jonathan Carr "Mahler: A biography" My personal strictures re Lebrecht's recent book pertain to the polemic and sometimes lurid nature of the writing. His love of the music and engagement with the subject matter, however, have been indisputable for decades. Best wishes--jl _______________________________________________ post: [email protected] unsubscribe or set options at https://pegasus.memphis.edu/cgi-bin/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
