Hi Lawrence and colleagues, Are you referring to when the reed players in question suck on their instruments to remove the water that has gathered in them?
That is a little disconcerting, but I understand why they have to do it. Some of my younger students will call their water key a spit valve, and I use that time to explain condensation to them. I don't hear the words "spit valve" much any more... Uh, maybe someone could explain more fully why brass players empty their instruments. Wasn't it Kenny Betts who told the story here on the list about the conductor that chided his brass section about emptying their instruments, and commanded them not to do it, thus destroying a otherwise good performance by having a gurgling sound effect the tone of the instruments? I may get flamed again for writing this, but here goes. One can be a physician and not be the brightest bulb in the box when it comes to culture. To further explain here's an example that I read just before checking my email: I read where a certain person from the State of Alaska who has aspirations to run for President of the United States would like to eliminate all arts spending in the United States. I guess since it's not gun or fishing related, it's not "art". To me this is why we have so much ignorance in the US, because arts and culture have been eliminated from the curriculum in public and private schools. It's a crying shame that courses such as Music Appreciation and Art Appreciation are no longer taught. As Hans likes to inform the list from time to time,(which I enjoy reading) from a very beautiful early spring day in Michigan. I saw my first Robin Red Breast of the season today. The temperature was nearly 60 today, and beautiful sunny skies. What I do find disgusting, and would like to see it stopped, is the way clarinet players put the end of the instrument actually inside their mouth - it's horrible to watch and completely turns me off the music. I believe oboe and bassoon players do the same - I stay away from them.
