I always thought that Bill VerMeulen had the right the right idea when it came
to diagramming lip trills. I remember witnessing his masterclass at IHS 97
(Rochester, NY) where he coupled two chairs on the stage, asked the student to
sit in one, then then the other and then to try and sit in the crack between
both chairs. The student kept repeating this and was encouraged to pick up the
pace while doing so and there was a lot of jumping from one chair to the other
until it got a little silly. The he asked the student to repeat the pattern of
a long open C, then an open D, and then "the note in between [the cracks]", and
then to pick up the pace while doing so. The student eventually broke into a
sustained even trill somewhere in this process. I may be a little fuzzy on all
the details but it was quite a performance.
