"This may not be much help to you but I had the bell cut off an old horn
with
a view to having a screw coupling added. This was for transport purposes on
a train which was a nightmare during rush hour. I never did get the coupling
fitted."

Whoa. Wait a minute. You had the bell CUT first, without soldering on any
ring parts?? No ring parts, male or female? Just cut the bell, somewhere?
Anywhere?

I don't get that. S.O.P. is to remove the whole bell, solder on the male
ring portion and THEN cut at the top of that solder joint, so the cut is at
the proper spot. Why would anyone just cut a bell? Did you do this
yourself, or did a technician do it? If the male ring portion was soldered
on already, why not go the distance and solder on the female portion?
You're 80% done at this point, anyway.

I don't get this at all. "With a view to having a screw coupling added"?
At what later date? Why did you never get this job finished? What did you
use for a horn at this point, or did all your parts call for stop mute?

Color me puzzled.
