Hi Chris, I have an old 8D (serial number starts 69...) and while teaching at the University of Western Ontario, I played next to a guy with a brass Kruspe. It was difficult to match and friends said that my sound didn't project off the stage as well as his. My dear friend Walter Lawson suggested a different bell. I tried another, heavier nickel silver bell, a brass bell and an ambronze bell. The ambronze won. Just after I had the new bell, I played an antiphonal piece for 8 horns and organ. I played 2nd in the 2nd choir (which was to the conductor's left). He said that he couldn't hear me; the 3rd in my choir couldn't believe that. Unbeknownst to me the conductor's wife was taping the rehearsal. We listened to the tape at intermission, and all you could hear was me! It took a little getting used to, but I wouldn't go back.
