Doug,
I looked into these about a year ago, and decided upon the Zoom "Handy Recorder
H2". Pocket size. Perhaps more complicated than you'd like, with the typically
goofy user interface of this sort of gadget - e.g., you must click the right
button to go down the menu list (instead of the down button - argh!). It has
two pairs of microphones - there are several scenarios where you may want to
record things in two directions - two people facing each other, for example, or
a group on one side, and the reflected "hall" sound on the other.
But I've only used it once, it turns out, a month ago. I set it up on a light
stand (I am a photographer) at the edge of the stage. I recorded from only one
pair of mics, at 160 kb/s, auto level "M". I boosted the level about 6 dB in
Audacity (free sound editing software). Result:

A Mozart Octet, played by a group only a few days old - I accept responsibility
for the blatty low horn, but comments are not otherwise welcome except those
related to the technical quality of the recording! I'm no audio engineer, and
my ears are old - you be the judge.
(I see Steve Freides has beaten me to the punch on the H2.)
