One of my quintets has a semi-regular gig at a church that likes the more jazzed up stuff, so we've been collecting. Here are some of our favorites (all very readable):
Peace Like a River, (easy swing) arr. Aaron Weitekampt, copyright AnderKamp Music Publishing (side note: Aaron Weitekamp also did some arrangements of We Gather Together, Let us Break Bread Together, Holy, Holy, Holy, and Praise to the Lord, Almighty that aren't jazzy, but also aren't staid, boring hymn arrangements. Very readable.) Over In The Gloryland (street march), arr. Zack Smith (Mainstreet Brass collection?) Just a Closer Walk With Thee, arr. James "Red" McLeod Go Tell It On The Mountain, arr. Lewis Buckley (Mainstreet Brass collection) I have one in my folder that we haven't tried yet for some reason, so I can't vouch for it: Since Jesus Came Into My Heart (it's marked "laid back swing feel" halfway through), arr. Jeff Anderson, copyright AnderKamp Music Publishing The aforementioned Canadian Brass Just a Closer Walk is a good arrangement, though we prefer the Red McLeod arrangement now. Canadian Brass also has Amazing Grace and the Saint's Hallelujah, which might be a little much for most church services. If you have trouble getting any of these, e-mail me off list and I can try to help track them down. Enjoy! My quintet is playing in a couple of weeks and we've had some requests for upbeat/jazzy tunes instead of the old staid traditionals. (Got books full of those!) Thanks!
