Dear All
Sorry if you have heard this one before! The late Ian Harper once played
Oberon in the Royal Festival Hall In London - George Szell conducting.
After the concert Szell asked to see Mr Harper and said - "Mr 1st horn -
wonderful!! - wonderful sound! - wonderful attack! - wonderful dynamic! -
everything right, just as I wanted it!" Mr Harper replied "thank you Mr
Szell - but what you HEARD was the third attempt that I made to get it
started!"
Or what about a certain other very well known British horn player (name
withheld to protect the not so innocent) who had to perform Oberon at a
school's concert conducted by a certain tone deaf choirmaster who fancied
himself as an orchestral conductor. So he played it reading horn in E
flat. When the strings came in, they all started to laugh but the
conductor carried on without batting an eyelid. The 1st horn nudged the
2nd horn (who was once my horn teacher) saying in a stage whisper - "what
are they laughing at xxx? what are they laughing at?"
That 1st horn was succeeded by another player who used always to do the
opening of Oberon on the F side of his double horn - 1st and 2nd valves
with a bit of light stopping - I once depped on 2nd when he did this and it
was pure magic!
Cheers

Horn Tutor - Leeds Music College
