Last Saturday Victor Valenzuela with the assistance of IHS and Pima Community College (PCC) hosted an intrastate horn workshop, called Con Cornos Aqui, at the PCC West campus in Tucson, Arizona. It was a fun day filled with exhibits, horn choirs, master classes, recitals and concerts. The guest artists included David Cripps, formerly principal horn of the LSO and now Lecturer of Horn at Northern Arizona University; Dr. John Ericson, Assistant Professor of Horn at Arizona State University; Dr. Keith Johnson, Professor of Horn at University of Arizona; Victor Valenzuela, horn teacher at Pima Community College; Mark Houghton, Principal Horn of Phoenix Symphony, Jacquelyn Sellers, Principle Horn of Tucson Symphony Orchestra (TSO). In addition there were performances by the TSO horn section minus one, the Southern Arizona Horn Club (SAHC), a college horn choir and an amateur and young student choir.

This report would be amiss if I didn’t mention the (to me) amazing “performance” of Dennis Houghton of Houghton Custom Horns (who just happens to be the father of Mark Houghton). It all started when I brought him a friend’s horn that was peppered with dents including a biggie just before the tail branch. He has a very simple technique (which I will leave to Dennis to explain if he wishes as I don’t know if it is proprietary or not), using tools which I was told he made himself. He quite literally “ironed” out the all the dents in a matter of minutes so cleanly that you could hardly tell where they had been unless you knew. Dennis was quite busy all day fixing horns to everyone’s satisfaction. He is based in Dallas, TX so now you know there is a very fine craftsman in that area when you have a need for horn repair. I understand that he plans to be at the Eldon Matlck’s Oklahoma Horn Workshop, October 24-26 in Norman, OK.

The next horn workshop in Arizona is the A.I.R. Horns retreat in January. Please see http://www.miss-karen.com/airhorns.htm for details. Arizona is a happening place for horns. Y’all come and see for yourself.
