William- Get yourself a piece of dowel about 1/2 x 4" and a rawhide mallet. Place the end of the dowel against the ring at a slight angle. Using the rawhide mallet strike the dowel a number of sharp blows, rotating around the ring in a clockwise direction. Remember, a lot of little taps is better than one great big one. After the ring is removed, use the dowel to drive off the bottom bearing plate. When reassembling, line the bottom bearing plate up with the alignment mark (making sure it's on the right casing-all non-interchangeable parts are numbered). Push it in as far as it will go with your fingers, then tap straight down lightly with your dowel and mallet until it seats firmly on the casing. Then, screw the retaining ring back on tight. Tap around the circumference of the ring and retighten (twice).
