No ,do not resort to wrenches or pliers.
You could use a thin leather belt- about 1/2" wide.
Wrap the belt around the ring, pull it tightly around the ring with your 
fingers, and holding it in that position try to unscrew the ring.
Use light pressure and do not force it , but this gives you a little more 
leverage around the entire ring.
