Thanks for the information :) I've been very curious about them ever since my
old teacher bought one ca. 1910. It was in fair condition though, but it
still played well, and I loved the playability of it.

How much did your YHR801 set you back? I'm basically looking into one as a
study instrument for now. My ultimate goal is to be fluent on one eventually
so
that it'll help my playing in other areas.

Hi William,

The YHR-801 was purchased from Marty Hackleman
in 1998 for an undisclosed price. I believe about 40-50
of them were made of which I think 2 made it to the
states. The Vienna Phil has a set and I'm not sure
where the others are. A Yamaha rep told me that
the parts are made in Japan but assembled in Vienna.
He said the cost would be around 6-7000USD. There
has been input that the new horns are not the same as
the old and that they may have a new model number
of YHR-601. It's been a few years since I looked into the
Yamaha so the info may be inaccurate. Also, none of
the reps at Yamaha that I talked to were sure of the
Vienna horn status/model number/price/etc.

Keep in mind that the leadpipe is a crook on the Vienna
horn and if the horn doesn't play to your liking, a crook
change may make the difference.

IMHO, one of the best buys right now is the Pizka. The
ones I've played have had a marvelous velvety tone, no
"bad" notes and the workmanship was as good as it gets.
The only negative I've heard is the loud action, however,
that is the sound of a Vienna horn. The dual pistons
thump when they return and they are as loud on my
Yamaha as any other horn I've played. If anyone knows
how to silence the return noise on a Vienna horn please
let me know! BTW, the Pizka is priced at 4,110 euros.

After the Pizka, I would try the Jungwirth. Both horns are
currently being made and multiple copies may be available
to play. The Alexander might be the third horn on the list.

Regards, Jerry in Kansas City
