>Marching band does take brains and responsibility<

Dear All

An old school friend of mine joined one of the crack British army guards
regiments as a bandsman.

One day, whilst playing in a concert somewhere, he made a 'spare' entry.
So, as punishment, he was told to stay behind in the band headquarters
after work (the guards musicians do not live in barracks but reside in
their own private homes around London) and do an hours extra practise. So
he went into a practise room, sat down, put his cornet on his knees and
proceeded to read a magazine which he had propped up on the music stand..
After a while, the door opened and a sergeant (100% soldier and 0%
musician) poked his head in and bawled - "Wot y'u doin' 'ere lad!!"
My friend replied - "I made a false entry in the concert so I have been
given an hours rest counting practise!" The sergeant bawled - "well get on
wiv it then lad!" and shut the door.
My friend is now public relations director of a big newspaper!

Cheers

Paul Kampen
