Both my teacher and I play Karl Hill horns, but he plays a Geyer model and I
play a Schmidt. He noted that my horn was slightly darker than his, and also
that the notes seemed to lock into place better than they do on his horn. At
the same time, he noticed that the High Range was easier on his horn, and that
the Geyer was more agile when it came to moving between partials. The nice
thing about the Hill Schmidt is that he has moved the piston valve slightly
back so that it is much more comfortable to reach. I switched from a geyer
wrapped horn, and I immediately noticed better response and an overall more
pleasant sound.

the two sides of the horn which I find to be true also. The major drawback to
the Schmidt style is the ackward reach for the thumb valve and some horns have
been know to have a bad high Bb. I currently have a very old Lidl schmidt wrap
in gold brass that has a very easy reach for the thumb valve. I bought it off
ebay in very rough condition from somebody in Germany. I had Dennis Houghton
bring it back to life and it is quite a nice horn. I find the geyer wrap horn
to be very even and consistant in play through all the registers. I personal
prefer the smaller ( more resistant ) playing horns, I think they are much
easier to play cleanly on in technical passages. The big horns are just too
sloppy sounding in technical play.

Subject: [Hornlist] Geyer vs. Schmidt?

I'm wondering what the main differences are between the Geyer and Schmidt
wrap horns concerning sound, playing characteristics, tapers, etc. The two
horns seem to be grouped together in the same category of smaller orchestral
horns, so any thoughts distinguishing the two are welcome.
