Thanks to Ben Reidhead and Klaus Bjerre for explaining the horn. I was pretty sure that's what it was but the lengths didn't look right to me at first glance and thanks to Klaus I now I have a math headache.
I have not found any biographical information on Eric Hauser, yet. I have a couple of other photos of him from Chautauqua and of course he wrote or arranged several pieces for horn. I have identified Miss Ellen Stone, the young lady pictured with Eric Hauser. She was a New York freelancer in the 1930s and 1940s and a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony. She was probably a student of Josef Franzl.
