   Interesting thread here on HP profiles. I’d like to add that I’m a very happy DesignJet 130 owner and was pretty satisfied with the stock HP profiles for both Premium Plus Photo Satin and Photo and Proofing Gloss. I wasn’t very satisfied with HP’s Matte paper profile and decided to purchase a printer profiling device to see if it would improve matters. The device I purchased was the ColorVision PrintFix Pro, in part because of some good reviews and it’s price was less than half of the other printer calibration devices on the market. I routinely calibrate my LaCie monitor using the Blue Eye Vision Calibrator will comment that I never spend money on an item like this without thorough research into the pros, cons, and potential benefits.

 

   To make a long story short, I was pleasantly surprised at the difference in the calibrated matte prints versus the stock HP profiles. Quite a significant difference, really. I then profiled the Satin and Gloss papers and was also quite surprised at the very noticeable improvement. Not as clearly noticeable as for the matte case, but nonetheless a significant improvement. The best way I can describe this is to say that the overall color gamut, or dynamic range, was lifted another notch beyond the HP profiled prints. The darker colors in particular displayed much improved dynamic range as compared to the stock profile.

 

   I want to say that in my case, the purchase of a hardware printer calibration device clearly was worth the extra investment to me. I have additionally created excellent profiles for Hahnemuhle Photo Rag and Ilford Classic Pearl. HP does have profiles for some of these papers on their DesignJet support site, but I have found them to give pretty poor results with my printer.

 

   Just in case anyone might want to ask, I have no connection to ColorVision and suspect that any of the other quality printer calibration devices would do just as good a job creating custom profiles for this printer.
