I finally got a response from HP. Here is part of their slightly scary email answer: "Before upgrading the firmware, please consider whether doing so is necessary at the present time. If your printer is working correctly, we would recommend that you do not upgrade at this time. However, if your printer is not working correctly or if you are experiencing an issue that may be corrected by the upgrade, we want to make sure that you are able to correct your issue as efficiently as possible." Well, how do I know if the printer is working OK or not and what's the upgrade supposed to do anyway. I have experienced a couple of unexpected printing problems, but who's to say if a one-time screw up is pilot error or a firmware defect? They suggested running a Dos command to try to load the file. I'm from the dark ages (pre Dos), so I'm more familiar than most using Dos commands, but I couldn't get it to work. Eventually I was successful with a right click, save routine, similar to what you suggest. I ran the update, the printer front panel did all sorts of blinking, and when it finished the printer shut down as expected. When I re-started it I got some fault display that was NOT listed in my manual and, of course, my first thought was "Here we go with a 2 hour hold with HP support". But unplugging the power cord, saying a short prayer, and re- connecting the printer did the trick and I was able to confirm that I'm using D.05.01. Thanks to the wonderful HP documentation, I have not a clue as what the upgrade involved. Does anyone know what we've done here? Bob ------------------------ Yahoo!
