There is a hardcopy manual, printed in several languages, that explains a lot about the printer in a "how do I" format and a "troublshooting" format. I'm not near my 130, but I'm pretty sure that it led me to sit calmly and wait for the calibration to happen. You pretty much needed to install the s/w to make this happen anyway, since you are calibrating the printer with the driver, and there is a screen you have to go through to select papers, etc.
The little icons are pretty cryptic, but the manual has always explained what the problem was. But more than once I've simply rebooted the printer (by pulling the plug) to get past a problem that couldn't be sorted out.
