After further testing I've come to the conclusion that the "inked area only" feature is not working as it did on our DJ800s. Documents that included white space are not trimmed. The white space is maintained if it is part of the design layout. It does trim white space on setups where a design is placed on a larger page size but does not trim white space within the design layout. It is as if the printer is treating the white spaced as part of the inked area.
This is not a problem for us when printing from a roll but causes us no end of problems when trying to print on cut sheets where we are trying to center images on a page and trying to avoid any trimming. Regardless of the settings we use in page setup it always shifts the image and we have to manually compensate within the document layout for this shifting. Example: If a layout is designed at 24x36 with a blank 1.4 inch margin, and paper of the same size is loaded into the printer, 1.4 inches from the leading edge of the design must be trimmed from within the layout to compensate for the 1.4 inch shift from the printer. Printing the document without making this adjustment results in a 2.8 inch spacing along the leading edge. As you can imagine this is confusing for our customers, and creates lots of extra work.
