If memory serves me correct, the printer knows when its loaded from the rear
that it's a roll,
and that activates the cutter, if present, unless you disable it in the
printing dialog. As for
the roll, just having the continuous paper source available from the rear is
all there is to it.

The only tip I would give is using the cutter and advance feed mechanism to
trim away a
couple of inches of paper before the first print task after roll paper has been
loaded over
night. Spring tensioned rollers leave dimples in the leading edge of the
paper, that can mar a
print. If you press the oval gray "OK" button when roll paper is loaded, that
sends a signal to
cut the paper. When you use this before a print job, the paper advances about
1/2 inch and
then is trimmed. So, if you go through about 6-7 of these mini trim cycles,
you trim away a
couple of inches to avoid the dimple marks that often accompany leaving roll
paper loaded in
the printer. The alternative is to unload the roll when you are done, but it
an be tricky to get
roll paper loaded, so many users leave it loaded once they are "on a roll."

Enjoy.
