After a couple of years using the DJ, I've worked out that it pulls the paper in and runs it through a little way, to check that it lines up square. This is so that if you are going to print something longish, say 40" or so, it won't drift off as it runs through when printing.
I've found that the leading edge must be a true, straight 90 degree cut, and the left edge, looking in, must line up exactly with the moulded mark and also be a true straight edge. If it spits the paper out, it's just telling you that it isn't cut or fed truly straight. I'd be lost without this feature.
