Hello dl26c; I'm a consulting engineer with a "previously enjoyed" 450c also.
I bought a service manual from http://www.service-manual.net for $11.99. You can order on-line and download in PDF format if you have a PayPal account. I followed the instructions for the belt replacement and it was pretty easy, as far as the instructions went.(You'll need a set of torx screwdrivers in various sizes.) The carriage had free motion over its full range when I was done. However, I ran into a problem after I was done with the belt and I still haven't got it working. The manual was no help in troubleshooting. (more on that in a separate post...) I'm hoping there's another member of this group that can offer advice on troubleshooting.
