Bill:
I had the same problem. This is what I did.
 You must go through the HP dance.
First go ahead and agree to the charge.  HP will have you run through
the basic diagnostics.  They will have you read the date code directly
off of the head itself.  Finally they will ship you a new head (mine
came two day Fedex).  At the end of the call ask to have your service
charge reversed.  On your credit card bill there should be a charge and
a credit form HP.
