I have compared the 2 printers (DJ130/Epson7800) extensively, with P25 captured image files, with a bunch of test prints. Out of the box the Epson had better colors even after tweeking with the settings, and most importantly after getting custom ICC profiles tailored from the most respected names in color. After a final tweek it was acceptable. But that isn't really doing a good job. That is making it by. ...So having one more week to test the printer before I own it without a chance to return, I purchased a RIP. (Needless to say to those doing proofs /prepress, my tests were mainly for CMYK proofing). Proofing does not lie, as even 1 level of change in any of the colors will show a shift on the press, and that is what a proof simulates.
The DJ130 is on my desk still and use it daily. Money was considered, but not an issue (as the RIP included cost same as the Epson), it was mostly the printhead clogs, and seeing and working with both, I just had the impression that the HP can take a smack or 2 more than the Epson, and keep on ticking. So my magazines are happy, I am happy. Another feature I have really been able to appreciate is the ability to purge the job without it going on and on and on, as the Epson pretty much finishes the job then spits it out towards the end unfinished. The 2 printers do print in their own charactor, meaning that I can tell you which printer printed the same image. I kind of lean towards the Epson side on this, as it just looks a bit more (hate the use the word) refined in the sense of demension. That is not to say it is better than the HP, because clearly it is not. Just different in a nice way. I hope some of you can agree with my experience and evaluation/observences, and others can make a better choice to their needs if in the market.
