Hi Paul, I got this happen on an Epson printer recently, and maybe intermittently in the past with my Designjet, too. I think the problem is with the thin clear strip which I think is called the CR (carriage?) encoder sensor strip, which helps the printer know where it is. When it lost track of its position, may be a bang, or if it has a chance it turns it self off.
You might try to clean it with a piece of lint free lens wipe. This has helped both my Epson and HP printers.
