Hi Ron,
I'm one of the really small guys on here, I mostly read and learn a
lot. Now I can offer something back.
When I had a color change on my Designjet 90r, I called HP, and the
gal sent me to the report, which stated that one print head was past
warranty, and two were about to expire. Putting total trust in her, I
ordered all three. When they arrived, I put all three in, and the
printer returned to perfect operating condition. The idea that print
heads could be so "conveniently" timed to stop working properly as
the warranty ticks out blows my mind. But, need less to say, it
happened to me. So I vote with replacing the heads out of warranty.
About the ink, I've 'cheated' on other printers, and paid the price
on one of them with jammed print head. On the Designjet, I won't
cheat. I just call HP and buy new ones from them. I should probably
mention that it might be worth checking out a supplier called
Superwarehouse.com. While I have not purchased HP ink from them, I
did purchase 18x24 sheet paper from them, HP paper. They actually
sold the HP paper cheaper than HP was selling it. I'm curious to see
what others might say of their experience with Superwarehouse.com.
In the meantime, I'd replace the print heads, trusting you'd have the
same results I had, and I'm totally back in business.
Oh, one final thing. I replace my ink when I see the report say it is
90% consumed or greater. I might be wasting a little ink, and I'm
anxious to see what other here say. But I find the HP Designjet to be
very frugal, and I like it for that reason.

Several months ago I acquired a used HP Designjet 30n, it been
working wonderfully. However, I believe I need new inks or
heads as the dark blues and blacks are fading to brown during
large prints.
The maintenance software, shows the heada are out of warrenty,
and I'm not sure if I trust the printer's ability to judge how
low the inks are. The printer was sitting around for a couple
of months before I acquired it.
So, the question is where do I find inks for this printer?
The local office supplies don't seem to carry them.
