That's true, any new URI/device plugged in after a CUPS restart/SIGHUP would not be seen by CUPS 1.1.x. But, this issue is independent of the HPLIP update. Seems to me reseting/SIGHUP for CUPS 1.1.x would be "new URI/device" dependent not "HPLIP update" dependent. Of coarse this is not a problem with CUPS 1.2. -dave > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf > Of Johannes Meixner > Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2007 5:36 AM > To: hplip-devel@lists.sourceforge.net > Subject: Re: [HPLIP-Devel] Why are the HPLIP daemons required? > > > Hello David, > > On Feb 27 19:28 Suffield, David wrote (shortened): > > > The correct way to update HPLIP is: > > > /etc/init.d/cups stop > > > /etc/init.d/hplip stop > > > replace the installed HPLIP files with the files of the > new version > > > /etc/init.d/hplip start /etc/init.d/cups start > ... > > After an HPLIP update, you should be able to restart HPLIP with a > > single command. > > /etc/init.d/hplip restart > > As long as there are no HPLIP print jobs active, a CUPS > stop/restart > > is not required. > > As far as I know at least CUPS 1.1 requires a restart (or at > least a "reload" via SIGHUP) because otherwise the cupsd may > not notice possibly changed DeviceURIs of the hp backend > and/or it may also not notice a new backend (e.g. hpfax). > > Currently I am working on a HPLIP upgrade from version 0.9.7 > (which had /dev/usb/lp* USB DeviceURIs) to version 1.7.2 on > Suse Linux Enterprise 10 (which is based on Suse Linux 10.1) > with CUPS 1.1.23 (in particular on AMD 64-bit hardware). > > > Kind Regards > Johannes Meixner > -- > SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5, 90409 Nuernberg, > Germany AG Nuernberg, HRB 16746, GF: Markus Rex > > -------------------------------------------------------------- > ----------- > Take Surveys.
