It seems that HPLIP does not support slide and negative film scanning in HP
Photosmart C7180 which has an integrated slide and film adapter. I'm running
Ubuntu 7.04 with HPLIP 1.7.3 and xsane 0.991.

I can't find any options (in xsane) which would turn off the normal scanning
lamp and turn on the transparency light inside the lid. There is only one
scan source option available (Flatbed). There is the source medium option
which mention slide, negatives etc, but even if you select slide or one of
the negative options, the transparency light stays off when you start the
scan. I believe there should be something like 'Transparency' as scan source.

I have been reading the source code of HPLIP (version 1.7.4) and I can't
find anything which would seem to be related to film scanning. So I suppose
film scanning is not supported.

For comparison and to see what to expect I downloaded the source code of
Iscan (http://avasys.jp/hp/menu000000500/hpg000000442.htm) which is used for
Epson All-In-Ones. In that code you can easily see that film scanning is
supported, because you can see comments about transparency unit, film and
even about focus position changes. Unfortunately I don't

I hope that film scanning will be supported in the next version, so that I
don't have to use Windows XP to scan slides.
