So did I.

Yes, we all have a long history with the unavoidable Jet-Direct
connectivity, don't we? ;-)

Could you please detail, what exactly you modified, if you
remember, that is?

this is what I think I am doing as well. More precisely, I used
Yast to delete the Cups printers and then run hp_setup to create
new ones.

This is great news!

ok. No problem with this.

Just trying, I deleted the hp printers via yast, powercycled the
printer, stopped/started cups and ran hp_setup once more,
assigning a different fay queue name, which led to the creation
of two new queues. Finally, just to be on the safe side I
restarted hplip as well.

 But fax direcly from hp-sendfax
or alternatively via OpenOffice still does not work, giving the
"usual errors"

Could you possibly let me know how
your fax printer definition looks like? For example, mine is
like this:
Device URI: hpfax:/net/HP_LaserJet_3390?ip=192.168.1.3
which I get from the cups admin interface at http://localhost:631/printers

Thanks and thank you very much for your help. I think if your
3380 is working ok, I should be able to do the same with my
3390/3392

regards
