This is telling. If lsusb doesn't work, then HPLIP will not function for 
USB devices. There is something misconfigured in your USB subsystem. I 
don't have any knowledge about the distro you are using to be able to 
help you. I would recommend that you post to the slam64 forum/mailing 
list to resolve the underlaying USB issue. Once lsusb begins working, 
there is a chance that HPLIP will begin working.

One thing you could check: was your kernel built with the USB filesystem?
